NDON Feb 16 An accel mass of Marshal Konev s First Ukrainian army bore down on Berlin s river defenses and moved toward Cottbus 52 miles from Berlin. Soviet correspondents said Neisse defenses shattered after fierce battles near Forst and Guben 15 miles north and that the main weight of Konev s force had linked with Zhukov s army for a two pronged assault on Berlin. Beeskow 31 miles southeast Berlin and Cottbus 52 miles south are on the Spree and key rail routes. Soviets reported fighting along the east bank of the Spree as Forst and Guben were by-passed or captured. The northern advance extended to near Stettin with Sommerfeld taken 67 miles from the capital.
