Expect House To Pass Old Age Pension Bill

Raleigh February 12 A long debate in the Senate over pension costs ends with passage of the bill in the upper chamber. The bill would fund old age and dependent pensions with a state levy and federal aid, creating an equalization fund to help counties unable to raise full support, while counties would still pay one fourth of costs. Strong opposition centered on county funding and a proposed 10 cent levy.

Pickens Fights Tax Extension

Raleigh February 12. Representative J C Hobbs fought the measure insisting it threaten housing costs and budget balance. He allied with Rupert Pickens Tom Cooper and others. Distribution of the tax was defended by Finance Chairman Victor Bryant who cited 600000 for the biennium. He argued parity with existing laws for self builders. Opponents argued it clashed with national housing policy and higher costs. Additional amendments failed from King Blokenship and Horner.
