Stocks Drift Lower As Markets Weaken On Credit Worries

The Dow at noon fell 1.91 to 744.72 as declines outpaced advances by about 200 issues on the NYSE. Pan American World Airways dropped to 11 1/2 after reporting a 1969 loss. Chrysler slid 1% after cutting its quarterly dividend to 15 cents. Motorola fell 7 1/2 amid mixed earnings expectations. The AP 60-stock average eased .2 to 259.6 with sizable volume in Continental Oil and Beneficial Finance among most active shares.

House Damaged In Stove Fire At Dalton Street

A defective oil cook stove caused an early morning fire at 206 Dalton St. occupant Dan Gibson said he lit the stove and a flame flared igniting a wall behind it. Firemen reported wall and attic damage.

Phillips-Foscue Corp manufacturers of urethane foams for furniture and bedding report 24 weeks ended Dec 13 sales of 2,429,903 up 14.6 percent from the prior year. John P. Net income is 95,767 or 21 cents per share versus 98,655 or 22 cents in the prior year’s period.

Boat Trailer Damages Car On S Hamilton Street

An errant boat trailer damaged a parked car at 3:30 p.m. in the 200 block of S Hamilton Street. Damages were about 190 dollars to the car owned by R D Joyner and 10 dollars to the boat. The trailer, towed by Jackson Ramsaur Jr., broke loose on Hamilton Street. no charges filed.
