Snow Strikes Wide North Carolina As Eastern Areas Get Heavier Hit

The central and eastern Carolina regions received most of Thursday's snow with up to 12 inches in Siler City and heavy accumulations along the Eastern Seaboard. Roads iced by freezing temps caused hazards though conditions improved in places. The storm caused school closures and travel delays from North Carolina to Georgia, with at least four deaths reported from traffic accidents in the region.

Connally quips over ulcer during term bid talk

In Austin Gov. Connally faces questions about a possible fourth term while Sen. Kennedy runs for president. A reporter asked if Connally could run with Kennedy, and the governor replied yes in a slow voice. A second reporter pressed about his ulcer, and Connally joked that it had worsened.

American 101st Airborne forces discovered a jungle prison camp 90 miles northeast of Saigon and rescued 51 starving, malaria-ridden Vietnamese inmates. The camp had up to 100 prisoners and possibly served as a regional HQ. one inmate was found in wooden stocks.
