Snowstorms Hit North Carolina Cities Hard in Late January
North Carolina endured back to back snowstorms moving through Asheville and surrounding counties. Asheville spent 64000 thawing pipes and clearing streets while sand and salt usage rose. Absenteeism reached 25 percent in industrial plants and road crews battled 175 to 240 workers around the clock. Estimated road clearing costs reached four million dollars. Other cities including Greensboro and Winston Salem faced tens of thousands in snow removal losses and business disruptions.
