Wade V. Bowman testified in his own defense in Newton as a former officer he admitted to some improper contact with a 12 year old girl, denied the assault charges, and described the events leading to the encounter. He remained calm and expressed shame after the incident.
Matthew Wasser, claiming injustice in capital punishment, was executed by electric chair in Ossining alongside Ernest Mimms. Wasser, adopted son of a man hanged in 1885, had protested abolition efforts and voiced indifference to life. Both condemned men had asked for coffee with their last meals.
In Raleigh a judge restrained Aaron Sapiro chief counsel for the Tri-State Tobacco Growers Cooperative from appearing for the association amid a bid to dissolve the group. W M Person, plaintiff, argued Sapiro was implicated in the suit while the defense read its answer alleging Sapiro’s alleged fraud. The judge took the objection under advisement as the case continued.
Doris Jolly, 9, was struck and run over by a truck near her Taylorsville home. The February 5 incident was ruled unavoidable.
Miss Maybell Powell, 16, of Asheville, was last seen after a Greenville motion picture showing. She traveled with her brother G H Powell and his wife toward Florida and vanished after leaving the theater. Police conducted an all night search and were informed by the brother this morning. Powell is described as five feet six inches tall with brunette hair.

The Senate voted 48 to 28 to not take up Senator Copeland’s request for a conference with miners and operators to resolve the anthracite suspension. New England lawmakers largely opposed the move amid fuel shortages as the party lines divided amid President Coolidge’s non intervention policy.
The Coast Guard patrol boat 234, missing radio calls near New London, is reported safe in Dutch Harbor at the western entrance to Narragansett Bay after weather drove it to shelter off Block Island. Boat 16, also in trouble off Block Island, is believed to be safely at Block Island.
Oscar Martin of Charlotte and James Knott of Hickory Grove face charges after Mrs. Mary J. Wright 64 was lured to a wood near Charlotte and assaulted. Knott allegedly confessed, identifying Martin. both suspects were arrested as police reported the woman’s identification and a joint confession.
Funeral services were held at Abbott's Creek Baptist Church in Kernersville for Phillip F. Rothrock who died at his home. The service was conducted by Rev. J. M. Hilliard Rev. Neese Davis and Rev. E. F. Mumford with many friends and relatives in attendance. Pallbearers listed as Arthur Hedgecock Turner Teague Harrison Idol Clark Idol C. L. Kaney and William Hedgecock.
Fraternity leaders and women student officials at the University of Missouri commit to curb campus drinking. Major Thomas Jones Wood, Confederate veteran and former commander of the local United Confederate Veterans camp, died last night at 10 at his daughter Mrs A T Wishart's home on Steele Street after a weeklong paralysis. He was born March 1, 1840 in Randolph County and survived by six of nine children. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery after funeral services Saturday at the Wishart home conducted by Rev. W R Harris and Rev. E K McLarty.
Henry D. Hummel of Portland Maine arrives for the funeral of Abe Hummel, the London died lawyer, and to press a claim to a fortune estimated over 1 million dollars. State Senator Hinckley says evidence supports Henry as Abe's natural son and heir despite questions of legitimacy.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad asked the Interstate Commerce Commission for authority to issue and sell 30 million dollars in five percent bonds.
