The Senate narrowly rejected an $11.6 billion proposal for an income tax credit to help parents with college expenses by a 48 to 45 vote. supporters argued it would aid families, while opponents warned it would not reach the poor and could raise deficits.
A traffic injury to a Black pedestrian touched off Jackson Mississippi's first racial demonstrations in over six months. Police used tear gas and shotgun blasts to disperse about 1,000 protesters, mostly high school students, on Monday night.
