Thousands Boycott New York City Schools

In New York city an estimated quarter of about one million pupils boycotted public schools demanding total racial integration. The one day protest drew 2,000 police on duty and 6,000 ready for action as 2,700 pickets gathered outside 300 schools while absenteeism appeared modest. Board officials called the action lawless and promised to keep schools open. Protest leaders warned of possible repeated or extended boycotts if demands are not met.

Two Viet Cong Kill U S Officer in Kontum Raid

In Kontum 260 miles north of Saigon a Viet Cong raid on a U S compound resulted in two guerrillas killed and one American officer wounded. Spec 4 Dale D Flinn of Fowler Kansas fired on intruders after they breached a fence and tossed grenades. The building burned and two Viet Cong fled into darkness. The wounded officer was treated at a field hospital in Nha Trang.

Plane Crashes in Gainesville Killing Ten Aboard

A South Central Airlines twin engine plane crashed after takeoff near Gainesville killing all ten aboard. The craft left Ocala en route to Jacksonville. Fire blocked door access as witnesses described the burning fuselage and exploding impact. Authorities activated an investigation led by John L. McWhorter with four assistants.

Parachutists Hurt After 5500 Foot Fall In Indiana

Parachutist Fred Hastings, 29, of Louisville was in serious condition after a 5500 foot fall at Seymour Indiana during his 41st jump with the Kentucky Parachute Association. Witness James Tittle said Hastings’ reserve chute briefly opened saving him from death. Hastings was falling face down when he pulled the cord at about 3000 feet as the main parachute failed to open properly. The second parachute became tangled with the first near the end of the fall.

Erhard's Security Chief Hangs Self

Eweld Peters, Ludwig Erhard's security chief, hanged himself in Bonn jail using a bed sheet. He was detained on suspicion of mass killings of Jews in the Soviet Union during World War II and had arranged security for Erhard's trips to Texas London and Rome. The case follows the resignation of Refugee Minister Hans Krueger amid wartime crimes allegations.

Ranger 6 Mooncraft Cameras Fail in Lethal Moon Approach

In Pasadena the Ranger 6 mission ended in failure as six onboard television cameras failed just before impact near the Sea of Tranquility. Ground controllers voiced a dawning realization 1:09 a.m. PST as the craft neared impact after a 66 hour flight.

Nixon Opposes Neutrality at Pfeiffer College Convocation

Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon urged against neutralizing Southeast Asia saying a neutral Vietnam would risk Chinese Communist power. He criticized de Gaulle’s plan and Johnson’s stance, and outlined support for freedom and aid worldwide. He spoke at Pfeiffer College in North Carolina, stayed with friends, and planned further North Carolina events.
