Japanese Steel Rings Isolated Chinese Troops

A ring of Japanese bayonets closed in on a Chinese division north of Nanking after it was cut off from reinforcements and supplies. Japanese sources say the Chinese force was retreating from Pengpu and was wiped out in close combat at Henshan near the Lunghai corridor.

Negro Executed In North Carolina Gas Chamber

James Marshall a 30 year old Negro from Wayne County was executed at the state's prison for first degree burglary. He died in the gas chamber after being pronounced dead 13 minutes 27 seconds later, with witness M C Corbitt reporting a kidnapping and robbery linked to the case.

Bishops Study Negro Members Contined on Page Two

A three bishop committee appointed at a Southeastern gathering tackles Negro membership in the Episcopal Church. McFadden Attorneys Seek New Trial Against Birch Biggs

Mrs. D. W. McFadden of Asheville North Carolina won a federal court judgment of 25000 against Emmett Gaddis former Polk County deputy in the slaying of her husband. Attorneys prepared to move for another trial for former Sheriff Birch E. Biggs an original defendant in the 100000 suit in Chattanooga Tennessee.

Wright's Insanity Defense Is Attacked By Prosecutor

In Los Angeles on February 4, defense and prosecution clashed over Dr. Samuel Marcus alienist testimony. Marcus testified Wright could be rendered temporarily conscious by witnessing the scene of the murders, challenging the insanity claim in Wright's trial for the double slaying of his wife Evelyn and his friend John Kimmel. The case hinges on whether a mental shock could render him unconscious at the moment of the shootings. The state seeks the death penalty.

Six WPA Grants Announced for Six Projects in North Carolina

State WPA Administrator George W. Joan Jr. announced $182,149 for six projects. Gaston county includes West Seventh Avenue improvements costing $7,490 and county road repairs $127,021. Other allocations cover Mecklenburg for museum piece work $698, Vance sewing rooms $13,273, Anson county road work $23,611, and Madison County sewing rooms $10,156.

Miguel Murder Trial Nears End in New Iberia

The Honora Miguel murder trial moved toward completion as witnesses testified she walked into a cafe on September 21 and fatally shot Evelyn Crawford at point blank. They said Miguel fired three times at Crawford and aimed at her husband, but the gun misfired.

Mass inmate shoots five inmates at infirmary

TEWKSBURY Mass Feb 4 three inmates aged 70 and 78 were killed and two others 55 and 76 wounded critically when John Mack a 70 year old six foot three inmate opened fire with a revolver before fleeing. Mack was later captured in Lowell and booked on murder charges with police stating he admitted the shootings saying they called him a bad name.

Washington reports Southern senators plan an early show on the anti lynching bill with changes possible. Senator Borah attacked constitutionality while Southerners tentatively moved a separate independent office appropriation bill to sidetrack the lynching issue.

Senate Leader Barkley forecast May adjournment while many House members eyed April departures. McNary proposed action on other measures by June 1. Two Men Die After Truck Overturns near Beaufort

In Beaufort County a truck carrying Florida plates overturned on a curve near Taligo killing two unidentified men. Sheriff J E McTeer said the victims were badly burned and a burned card in the seat bore the name D Sphaler Kissimmee Florida. A license contained Eva Sphaler Orlando Florida.
