Chief of Detectives R. W. Eleazer said Archie D. Nutter, held on a vagrancy charge in Raleigh, is an escaped convict. Fingerprints checked by the FBI indicate he is wanted in North Carolina.
Governor Hoey will attend Connie Mack Day on April 11 in Tarboro as the Philadelphia Athletics meet the Williamsport Grays of Pennsylvania. The invitation was accepted by Governor Hoey, per Mayor R Brooks Peters Jr.
A blast in the heart of Pest injures many and damages the Dohany Street synagogue as worshippers enter the building. The explosion, heard miles away, occurred as a parliamentary committee weighed legislation affecting Jews and is viewed by authorities as a political demonstration.

The Southern Furniture Exposition Building ends a two week market with 2 601 buyers registered by noon and a July 1938 high of 2 527. Exhibitors report a strong show yesterday and plan to pack up by tomorrow noon. Buyers from many states and the District of Columbia attended the combined Southern Furniture and Tomlinson Exhibition buildings, with over 200 exhibitors displaying. Major chains sent buyers in the first week.

Washington February 3 officials said the army air corps studies ways to boost training for reserve pilots as new warplanes are requested by President Roosevelt. About 2,400 inactive reservists exist with many qualified pilots, and Congress has proposals to raise incentives and instructors.

Texas Rep Jo Ed Winfree denounces Governor W. Lee O'Daniel for saying he reprieved condemned prisoner Winzell Williams for 30 days to face death day after day. Williams, a murder convict, says he is doing all right in Huntsville prison despite the governor's remarks.
Fire at the Blue Ridge school for boys in Hendersonville destroyed the entire main section. Unknown cause but believed storm damage ignited the blaze from downed wires. Students evacuated calmly after assembly, no injuries reported. J. R. Sandifer owner. insurance carried.
The U S embassy sought an Italian explanation for bitter attacks on President Roosevelt in Fascist papers over quotes claiming he spoke of American frontiers on the Rhine or in France. Roosevelt called such reports deliberate lies and restated his foreign policy at a press conference, condemning agitators and asserting no change in policy.
Berlin reports Warner Finck a well known German actor and announcer excluded from the Reichs culture chamber by propaganda minister Goebbels. Four other artists join him in the purge connected to remarks about the Nazi regime.
Mrs Kasturibhat Ghandi wife of Mohandas K Ghandi was arrested on arrival in Rajkot to join a civil disobedience campaign. She had ignored a prior warning and is noted as a longtime supporter who has served six periods in prison for political activity on his behalf.
The joint legislative finance committee will hold a Tuesday public hearing on a proposed crown tax on bottled soft drinks to raise revenue for state college tuition plans. Tuition hikes for in state residents are unlikely, while out of state pricing may rise. Other actions include governor appointing up to six special superior court judges and indecent exposure bill debates with references to human rights and public disrobing limits.

U S Commissioner Eugene Taylor found probable cause. bond set at 2500. Federal agents testified to the arrest following delivery of about four ounces of narcotics.
