A force of 250 American marines will leave Cavite in the Philippine Islands tomorrow bound for Shanghai China as part of a deployment.
One hundred marines arrived from Guam on the transport Star. Another hundred from Cavite will join them tomorrow and sail for Shanghai aboard the U S S Pecos. A detachments arrival from Guam was warned today and will proceed at once to Shanghai aboard the Pecos.
Marines of the fourth regiment loaded the last of their shipment aboard the transport for an outward voyage toward Shanghai. General Smedley Butler bid farewell at a review, but later saw the first battalion embark and expressed regret at not accompanying them. Colonel Charles S. Hill to command the regiment. Le Chaumont to Guam for orders, with possible deployment to Manila if needed in China.
London reports Cantonese Foreign Minister Eugene Chen refuses to sign any agreement fixing the future status of the British concessions at Hankow and Kiukiang unless Britain withdraws troops from Shanghai. Chinese cabinet discussions hint at possible shifts of defense forces and a long term Shanghai presence. The Asiatic fleet moves to Shanghai with the navy auxiliary Pecos and Gold Star marines to Cavite for deployment.
Robert Paine Scripps of Cincinnati son of late E W Scripps publisher is named defendant in a federal suit filed by Mrs Josephine Scripps of San Diego seeking an accounting of the 34 newspapers once run by the elder Scripps. He is executor and trustee of the estate.
Washington February 3 The Senate called Secretary Kellogg to testify about lists of Americans and American corporations owning or claiming lands or oil concessions in Mexico.
Ger Stettin Feb 3 AP reports Martin Richter a tradesman cut off the tip of his sweetheart’s nose to curb her public flirting. He surrendered to police and awaits recovery with hopes of reconciliation. He plans to marry Fraulein Zoellner after his sentence.
Berlin February 3 AP The chancellor announces trust in the constitution and policy of international conciliation while pledging reforms in the Reichswehr and a broad program of financial and school legislation. He warns officials to avoid political organizations, notes Christian grounding of kultur, and outlines a school law and civil supervision by states. The Reichswehr will be depoliticized and remains separate from political groups.
Federal prohibition officials move to investigate an Atlanta Co-operative club party held January 17 amid reports of a bath tub scene and alleged free liquor. Deputy Prohibition Administrator W T Day will question Fulton county grand jury witnesses and may urge federal action if charges prove substantiated. Local officials provided evidence as the county grand jury questioned witnesses and examined the affair.

Eight year old Thurston Cole son of Mr and Mrs Charles Cole living two miles north of Asheboro was injured when Bert Hill from Sophia struck him with an automobile while he walked with classmates yesterday afternoon. He suffers a fractured hip and is in a local hospital.
In Asheboro on February 3, George Briles and his son Fred were injured when George Briles attempted to pass a road drag on Route 62 near Gray's Chapel. The truck overturned, fracturing the father’s skull and giving the son internal injuries. Both were listed in serious condition at a local hospital.
Zeb Parnell a 45 year old Southern Railway conductor died after shooting himself in a hospital last night following a morning attempt. His body will be sent to Concord for burial.

Testimony at a Washington tax suit hearing cited his stance as evidence of his dislike for Wall Street. Financiers recalled past refusals of New York bankers aid and noted Ford hosted Wall Street visitors while avoiding stock exchange trades.

Ashmore Kennedy 74, assistant grand chief of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, died suddenly of heart disease at a Venice meeting. His home was Winnipeg, Canada, and he served as assistant grand chief since 1910. He is survived by a widow, a son, and two daughters. He was long associated with the Canadian Pacific Railway. Funeral arrangements pending relatives’ advice.

The measure surfaced in both House and Senate with support from Buncombe and Caldwell legislators and a related proposal to channel surplus Muscle Shoals power for southern industry.
