The Avon Park Hotel in interior South Florida was destroyed by fire. Proprietor R. C. Holmes estimates the loss at 100000 dollars. Thirty six guests escaped in whatever clothing they could grab as flames spread.

The filing names Wachovia Bank and Trust of Winston-Salem and R L Smith as executors. The case signals a likely lengthy contest over the will and its bequests to heirs and administrators.
Seven white men were jailed in Raleigh and New Bern as police uncovered an automobile theft ring. Arrestees include Ted Honeycutt Walter Morris W L Vincent Thomas Hannah Clyde Brasher Kearney Davis and Willie Hughey held on $1000 bonds for stealing cars in Charlotte Durham Albemarle Kinston and Raleigh. The ring for over a year stripped cars and traded parts for whiskey Craven county officials said.
W P Rumfelt, 75, proprietor of a Stanley saw mill in Gastonia, was found dead in his home burned near the open fireplace. Authorities believe he slept and fell into the fire, possibly a heart attack, with no signs of attempted escape. Survived by four children. body found by daughter Mrs D F Hovis at breakfast time.

Gastonia reports Ephraim Huffstetler, 50, owner of a Gas tonia to Lincolnton bus line, wounded in a Dallas shooting affray. His son George Huffstetler, 22, and J F Bynum, 38, are jailed without bond. Carroll Clemmer, 20, of Dallas, who fired first, is a driver for Inter Carolinas Bus Co. Huffstetler and Clemmer had clashed earlier in Gastonia, where Huffstetler was beaten.
