Tanker Fire Blocks U S 221 In Spartanburg Area

A Petroleum Transfer Corp tanker overturned near Spartanburg spilling thousands of gallons of burning gasoline. Flames rose 60 feet as two 100,000 volt Duke Power lines were cut, knocking out power to northern Spartanburg County for hours. Driver Jack Johnson escaped through a broken windshield and survived unhurt.

MacArthur Improves Further in Hospital

General Douglas MacArthur shows further improvement at Lenox Hill Hospital after an enlarged prostate prompted admission. Officials report a comfortable night, less pain, and a cheerful exchange with Col. Gordon Barclay. Marines Are Fined In London

Seven of the U S Embassy's 15 Marine guards were fined reduced in rank and sent home by a court martial for selling duty free cigarettes in Britain. An embassy spokesman said ranks went to sergeant and that sentences will be reviewed by higher authorities. In London a Dutch man pleaded guilty to possessing untaxed whisky and cigarettes, saying he bought some from embassy Marines. The magistrate fined him 686 dollars.

Economy car insurance cut authorized nationwide

New York AP: more than 400 insurers will give a 10 percent discount on auto premiums for small economy cars starting March 1. The discount also applies to two car families with a 25 percent credit and to cars with the 10 percent driver education credit for male drivers under 25. Sports cars are ineligible.

Air Force Tanker Lands After Jammed Gear Crash

In SCULTHORPE England a US Air Force tanker crash landed with gear jammed at a base. Captain Thomas Rogenski of Torrington Connecticut ordered three crew to bail out while circling to burn fuel. He, Captain John Stukas and Sgt Paul Sterba guided a controlled landing as two others jumped. One airman Sidney Middle from Rock Valley Iowa suffered a leg injury awaiting hospital care. Grady Allen from Mobile Alabama was treated for minor injuries and shock. Lieutenant Richard Millar of Marshalltown was unharmed.

Ortiz Fights On From Secret Algerian Command Post

A fellow insurgent says Joseph Ortiz fled Algiers to a secret command post to press on against de Gaulle's Algeria policy. Ortiz led an eight day uprising that collapsed under army pressure and a warrant is out for his arrest. Demarquet described Ortiz in a Moorish villa briefing newsmen.

Jefferson Standard Broadcasting head Jos eph McKinley Bryan told the FCC that WBIG Greensboro is controlled similarly by Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. as the broadcasting unit. Howard Holderness said the insurance board oversees but the radio company runs daily affairs. Bryan, also an insurer director, said WBIG is owned by North Carolina Broadcasting Co with WBIG stock held by Jefferson Standard Life Insurance. Four firms seek Channel 8 licenses: Jefferson Standard and Tri cities Broadcasting of Greensboro and High Point’s High Point Television Co. and Southern Broadcasters Inc.
