Italy Voters Back Christian Democrats in 1948 Election
In 1948 Italy kept with western democracies as Christian Democrats led by Alcide De Gasperi won 49 percent of the national vote and 53 percent of seats. Communists and left Socialists polled 30 percent. A July 14 assassination attempt on Palmiro Togliatti sparked three days of riots as the Communist bloc blamed the government.
