Secretary voices US concern over coercive German reparations and urges nonpolitical handling. He presents an alternative if Allies fail to resolve the issue and stresses that European debts should be detached from politics.
Secretary Hughes proposed an international commission of financiers including Americans as an alternative if premiers fail to agree in Paris. He warned against forcible German reparations, stressing the need to base settlement on economic facts and free the payment plan from foreign domination and political instruction.
Shayler B. Tate, praised by national press, begins a two year term in Richmond for his role in the Wise county lynching of Dave Hurst on November 20 1920. Hurst a jail inmate accused of assaulting Mrs Ball was taken from Wise to Kent Junction and hanged. Tate stood trial with many co defendants. most were dismissed or awaiting fate. Tate and Napier faced verdicts and appeals. Napier's outcome awaited. The Wise county action drew praise as a new justice stance in the South.
High Point organizers plan a Monday emancipation anniversary holiday with a 1 PM parade of Black school children led by the South High Point brass band. The 2 PM program at First Baptist Church includes an address by C W Robinson and readings of the Emancipation Proclamation by S S Whitted.
Newberry Sheriff C M Blease identifies the prisoners as James Douglas and Odell Suber, escaped convicts from a chain gang. Suber faces a 1500 reward for murder related crimes and Douglas a 1000 reward for criminal assault. Police Friddle Stamey and Hoover commended. spy Will Wise aided the arrest.
Weath er outlook for the week beginning Monday calls for rain at the start and again late in the week. Otherwise fair with normal or above temperatures until near the end of the week, then a turn to colder conditions.
The city will reopen all public schools on Monday except the negro schools which will stay closed for emancipation day. White students will return with Christmas gifts and books as the holiday recess was shortened by late fall openings and influenza illness but is expected to end without further sickness.

Principal Johnston of the South Main Street graded school invites former high school students now in college or preparatory schools to meet him in the South Main Street school office Monday at 10 30. He wants to discuss matters, see how they are getting along, and renew acquaintances during the Christmas holidays.
Walter C Lassiter a confidential man and bookkeeper for the McCurdy Real Estate company pleaded guilty to defrauding the firm of 35000 He had served as an employee earning 75 a month for years and was sentenced to five years in prison
Governor Morrison rescinded the earlier extradition request for William Bingham Gray, cleared him of fraud charges, and ordered a further hearing. He criticized the Mebane school operation and warned Col Gray to cease school operations to avoid trouble, while noting Gray’s virtuous academic record at the University of Virginia.
Acting on Salisbury police orders, two men from Waynesboro and Atlanta were released from the city lock-up after authorities learned they were not responsible for a Salisbury robbery. The men had been identified by Salisbury and High Point officers, tied to Henry J. Albright assault and robbery Thursday night.
Preliminary investigation by Leicer Huffman into the death of Fred Allison 29 auto mechanic near Lincolnton includes a case discussion with Abigen Charlotte brother of the deceased. Allison was shot during an exchange between three liquor runners in a car and Deputies Baxter and Miller. A coroner jury suggested the fatal wound came from a companion but a physician said the bullet may have been battered by striking the car. Huffman also questioned why Deputy Baxter remains in office while bonded on felony liquor charges.
The Louisiana Ku Klux Klan says its agents will probe the August kidnapping and killings of Watt Daniels and Thomas Richards in Morehouse Parish. A state Klan official says arrests will be pursued and any member found involved will be outlawed and turned over for conviction.
A 17 year old high school girl Miss Minnie Finkelstein was wounded when three men assaulted her after a school entertainment. Officer William J. O'Malley was killed and a patrolman wounded a gunman. The girl’s wound is through the hip and not serious.
Banks and many businesses will close Monday in observance of New Year Holiday and Emancipation Proclamation Day. No special public celebrations planned. Enterprise will publish Monday as usual.
Perry Morgan general state secretary of B Y P U will meet with city union members and church representatives Monday at 7 30 p m to plan the state convention in June. The event will run three days and draw over a thousand delegates with Mr Ruth urging broad civic and church cooperation.
The Commercial National bank in Wilmington failed to open on December 30 and a notice on the doors said the bank was closed by order of the comptroller of the currency with the bank examiner in charge. W. P. Folger declined to comment beyond referring to the notices. An executive stated 100 cents on the dollar may be paid to depositors if properly managed. Thomas E. Cooper is president and Lieut. Governor W. B. Cooper is a director and former head of the bank. Other officers include Charles E. Betha, Horace C. Cooper, S. C. Pittman, and directors B. M. Hodges, Henderson Cole (deceased), and Betha.
Chicago business leaders predict a strong 1923 with rising trade and confidence, improved agriculture, higher farm prices, and steadier bank reserves and credit. They cite better commodity price relationships, favorable exchange rates, and broad economic activity as key factors shaping the outlook.
Benedit Crowell former assistant secretary of war and six "dollar a year" men linked to the council of national defense were indicted by a federal grand jury. They face charges of conspiracy to defraud the government in building war time camps and cantonments. Co-defendants include William A. Starret Morton C Tuttle Clemens W. Lundorff Clair Foster John H. McGibbons and James A. Mears.
James I. Campbell Republican who contested the eighth North Carolina district seat of Democrat Doughton will receive the usual $2000 payment under a deficiency bill. The elections committee had voted for Campbell with one dissent, but the committee report has not been acted on by the house.
A New Year's watch service will be held at Wesley Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church led by Rev. E. K. McLarty. The service starts at 11 o clock Sunday night and ends at the stroke of midnight ushering in the new year. Attendance is expected to be strong and the 7:30 p m service is canceled.
Bankers predict further progress for the coming year as money market eases and merchant stocks dip. Rail traffic grows heavier while merchandise stocks remain low, indicating shifting economic activity in the city.
Stock and bond prices closed the year at higher levels signaling better business and potential continued progress in 1922. Bankers see easy money, plentiful credit, high auto and railroad activity, rising exports, improving European markets, and strong construction as drivers. Unforeseen political or economic shocks abroad are viewed as the main risks to further gains.
At a Winston-Salem board meeting Wachovia Bank & Trust authorized increasing capital stock to 2.5 million dollars and declared a 50 percent stock dividend for holders of record. After the dividend, surplus and profits stay above 50 percent of capital, with total capital and surplus well over five million. No new branches are planned. Raleigh last opened to handle rising Eastern North Carolina business.
Grady McCoy Powers five year old son of Mr and Mrs S D Powers 2912 West Willis street died at 10 45 last night at his home after a brief illness with pneumonia Funeral services will be held at 2 30 tomorrow afternoon at the Holiness church conducted by Rev O L Ruth. Interment will be in Oakwood cemetery He is survived by his parents and four sisters
In Canon City Colorado on December 29 Frank Abbe declared this is my revenge and then fatally shot Misa Ivy Prentice who was married to his rival Llerbert. Local authorities reported the fatal shooting and ongoing investigation into the motive.
