Year End Review Of 1966 Guilford Plans For Future
Guilford County officials focused on long range planning in 1966. County Manager Carl Johnson highlighted the effort to project needs for public and private services in fast growing areas. Major projects included a proposed Greensboro county government center on Market Street and a new administration building to relieve crowding. A $60,000 addition to the Gibsonville County Farm dormitory allowed moving inmates and closing the county farm jail facility. Bids for a $300,000 Agricultural Center on E Market Street were slated for February with completion by late 1967. The year also saw steps to ease crowding in Welfare offices, regional planning along with a regional park study, and cooperation with cities on water and sewer extensions. Health and welfare initiatives included a $1 million federal/state health program for about 20,000 medically indigent children, air pollution ordinance, and a shift to the federal food stamp plan. The year closed with elections shaping county leadership, a school bond approval, and staff changes at the elections board.
