About 170 U S cavalrymen, outnumbered over three to one, repelled dawn attacks by 22nd North Vietnamese Regiment in Crow's Foot South Vietnam. Artillery fired point blank to stem the assault as helicopter gunships pounded the flanks and the perimeter held despite heavy casualties.
A spokesman said several hundred North Vietnamese fought from the northeast and south of the perimeter. The attackers expected a southward retreat but fled when Americans stood firm, later being fired on by their own troops. The main fight ended at 2:15 a.m. with 200 rounds fired and 45 enemy bodies found near the howitzer positions.
The Pentagon acknowledged civilian areas in North Vietnam have suffered damage during U S air raids while reaffirming that targets are military. The statement cited emplaced defense sites POL facilities and antenna sites near Hanoi as key military objectives. Heavily defended Hanoi is described as highly sophisticated with 70 SAM sites and thousands of anti aircraft batteries.
Exiles describe Cuba's Youth Technical Brigades as a mixed force of technicians and workers. Buel Ray Wortham Jr aged 25 from North Little Rock Arkansas battles a three year term in a Soviet labor camp after being convicted of illegally exchanging money with black marketeers and stealing a Lenin statue. His appeal faces slim chances as prior foreigners have seen appeals rejected. He is held in a solitary cell at Leningrad Prison awaiting action on appeal.
In Griffin Georgia seven year old Denice Marie Sanders died after her father shot her with a live 22 caliber pistol mistaken for a blank gun. Sheriff said coroner ruled an accident and no charges will be filed. The incident happened at a holiday gathering at Chester Wrights home.
A second major winter storm swept the Midwest and southern Rockies, delivering up to two feet of snow in places. Hazardous driving warnings extended from northern New Mexico to southern Iowa, with state police reporting slow traffic on U S 66 near Santa Rosa. Temperatures plunged into subzero ranges in Minnesota and North Dakota while the East saw flurries and mild southern weather persisted.
Agriculture Minister Vladimir Matskevich announced a record grain crop of 171 million metric tons for 1966, aided by favorable weather and higher yields per acre. He noted continued wheat purchases from the West likely for the next two years to shift European Russia wheat for domestic and export needs.
