Soong led negotiations that secured Marshal Chang Hsueh-Liang’s release and an end to the crisis threatening civil war. Chang’s fate remained uncertain as reports detailed his movements and the government’s stance.

A Charlotte report lists five highway deaths and three burn fatalities across the state during Christmas. Victims include Rose Bay residents Albert Credle 42 James Robert Asby 56 and Mrs Tom Bridgeman 52 killed in a parked car collision near Swan Quarter.
More than 100 persons were injured yesterday by firecrackers in the city. Local drug stores sold out of tetanus antitoxin and had to requisition more from Greensboro. Most injuries were minor burns, antitoxin given as precaution. Thousands of noisemakers exploded as High Pointers celebrated and police arrested two for shooting within the city.
