Associated Press reports on Christmas Eve 1936 as Pope Pius XII, speaking from a sick bed, pleads for peace and godliness and condemns communism while Spain’s civil war rages. Nazi Germany and Italy threaten intervention as Britain and France seek a European security accord. In China, Chiang Kai-shek remains under Communist pressure.
Braniff Airlines Flight fell during a test landing at Love Field Dallas killing six aboard. The Lockheed Electra twin engine disaster followed an attempted approach hindered by two other planes. Victims include Don Wal, 88, operations manager. Perry, 37, maintenance attendant. W. T. Chambers. Pascal Flor. Hubert Duane, 25, and another mechanic.
Kenneth Faircloth, driver of the school bus, sues for $10,100 after a wreck involving four children. Howard-Bobbitt company and J. H. Gibbs named in related actions. A separate suit grew from a fatality linked to the same incident and estate administrator.
The High Point Enterprise will not publish tomorrow as it closes shop each year for Christmas Day 1986. This annual holiday means no paper, with staff enjoying a long Christmas break.
Washington December 24 The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Pittman says imminent danger of another world war makes enactment of new neutrality legislation the most important task for the coming Congress. He notes the act expires May 1 and mentions proposals for a stronger law including broadened contraband and cash and carry ideas from Nye and others.
A casual telephone call between Vice-President Garner and President Roosevelt unsettled Washington society. The annual winter calendar includes must parties. Garner offered to skip his dinner with Roosevelt, and the White House banquet for Mr and Mrs Garner was cancelled.
In Sanford on December 24 a wood saw amputated Drewry Lacy McIlver's left arm and mangled his right as he stumbled over a log. He was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
A union church service will be held at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church on Christmas morning at 10 o clock. Dr G I Humphreys president of High Point College will deliver the Christmas message. A number of the citys churches will join in the service.

Copper shares rose on export price gains but overall activity was uneven with several major names edging up or down and rail bonds improving.
Washington December 23 AP The White House holiday program was packed forcing Franklin Jr to stay in a Boston hospital and miss Christmas. Anna Boettiger and her husband have just moved to Seattle. The day culminated with the dedication of the capital's community Christmas tree by the President.

Governor Ehringhaus announced that federal officials extended the January 15 deadline for paying the federal unemployment tax in North Carolina. He did not know the extension length but asked for the state collections to be postponed until March 15 to allow levying the state unemployment tax first.
