Washington notes that President Wilson aims to clarify belligerent replies and guide neutral responses. Diplomats report growing belief the United States may become a clearinghouse for war views and push for frank responses that open negotiations.

In Wilson on December 22 United States Marshal G P Stell and a posse found eight fermenters full of beer and eight empty ones at J P Carpenter’s premises. Some beer was hot, as moonshiners fled. A 60 gallon still from Whitley’s tobacco barn was uncovered and destroyed.
Denver reports William F. Koay known as Balale Bill is seriously ill at his daughter's home after a nervous breakdown. The line of health and exact location are unclear but the report notes his critical state.

The Federal farm loan board, reviewing 150 cities for the 12 new farm loan banks, is focusing on Charlotte North Carolina New Orleans Houston Hutchison Kansas Springfield Massachusetts and Baltimore. The board has virtually decided on six bank locations.
Paris dispatch reports the American ambassador to France delivered Secretary Lansing's note personally to Premier Briand between 7 and 8 last night. Paris papers publish the note textually today.
Mrs. Edward K. Graham wife of the University of North Carolina president died this morning at her Chapel Hill home after several weeks illness. The Durham report notes her as a prominent figure in university circles and local life.
A white 12 year old, Dewey Griffin, is held by city police after robbing a post office box last Tuesday evening. The box was unsecured and a check was taken and later tried to be cashed at a local store. Griffin says the check was given by his grandfather to cash. the grandfather denies knowledge of the incident.
London December 22 The British government will make no statement on President Wilson s peace note until consulting allies. Andrew Bonar Law said in the House of Commons that the question requires communication with our allies and cannot be answered now. Public reaction followed in morning papers with headline reactions from editors.
Captain George L. Lyerly, commanding Company A of the First North Carolina Infantry, arrived in Hickory tonight to spend a month with Mrs. Lyerly and other relatives over the holiday period.
Jacksonville dispatch reports a Seaboard Air Line freight train struck a washout at McKinley Florida today. Six men are believed killed and only one fireman is said to have escaped. The wreckage is on fire and wrecking crews have been dispatched.
Paris dispatch reports U-45 sunk by a destroyer. The submarine had recently sunk steamers off St Nazaire and was listed by Nants as sunk.
Fair and very cold tonight with a cold wave affecting eastern portions. Saturday stays fair and chilly as winds remain strong but diminish by Saturday morning.
The market opened steady with a sharp rally pushing May to 53 points higher before retreating. Active months traded 45 to 53 points up early, with May around 16.95 at one point and liquidation seen in the hour as the day progressed.
