Voters again decide on a $25 000 bond to extend the Carolina and Yadkin River railroad. Proponents expect 100 votes more to reach a 400 vote threshold as polls close at 4 47 this afternoon. Early returns show 245 yes and 25 no with turnout low among registered voters.
The High Point Athletic Club and Trinity College clash at the Washington Street Armory tomorrow at 8 PM in the first big local contest of the season. Trinity, coached by Chick Doak, has developed a fast team praised by sport writers, after a Winston-Salem game setback.
A blaze likely from wiring in the Parisian elevator shaft gutted the four story Birmingham shop on Avenue. The contents valued at over 200000 were lost and the building, a brick structure stocked with Christmas goods, was partially insured.

Robert L. Gonzales longtime The State writer and editorial contributor died at age 28 after enlisting as a private in the second South Carolina regiment during mobilization. He was a native of Columbia and is survived by his parents and one sister.
President Wilson traveled to Senator Williams home in Washington on December 26 to discuss Mississippi affairs. Williams praised the visit as generous, noting the president learned he was ill and still came to see him, a gesture he called thoughtful and kind.

Montgomery Ala Dec 20 One man was killed and several injured when the northbound Serminele limited overturned nine miles from Opelika on the Central of Georgia tracks. The engine stayed on the rails while six cars toppled into a shallow embankment. Passengers suffered cuts from broken glass as a wreck train from Columbus Ga and a relief train from Opelika responded. Officials attributed the crash to a broken rail.
A gas explosion at the Edgewater mine of Tennessee Coal, Iron and Coke near Birmingham killed one man and seriously burned a black worker while endangering about 800 miners. Twelve hundred men worked day and night, and many night miners were still in shafts when the blast occurred. rescue teams cleared the opening quickly.
Nashville Tennessee December 20 the education commission of the Southern Baptist convention recommends raising ten million dollars.
