Nine killed in two wrecks near Spring Hope

After a safety lecture at Spring Hope High School five students died when their car struck an oil truck. The wreck occurred thirty minutes after the talk, as authorities investigated the holiday travel risk in North Carolina.

William J. Green Jr. Dies at 53 in Philadelphia

U.S. Representative William J. Green Jr., a 16 year member of Congress and longtime Philadelphia Democratic chairman, died after emergency surgery for peritonitis with gall bladder complications. He had been on the critical list since last week and worsened Thursday night. He is remembered as a tough party disciplinarian with a large local political influence and a family man with four sons and two daughters.

North Carolina road plan expands in 1964 program

The North Carolina Highway Commission outlines a 1964 expansion with 64 major bond projects including 10 interstate sections and two large eastern bridges. About $20 million will go to secondary roads, but only $12-$14 million may be available for paving, potentially limited to around 600 of over 30 000 unpaved secondary miles. Major interstates to be contracted include I 95 in Halifax County and I 40 in Buncombe, with routes on U.S. 1 across Pamlico River and Currituck Sound. The Cape Fear River bridge at Wilmington remains on the drafting board for now.

Weather Satellite Tiros 8 Sent To Orbit From Cape Kennedy

The Tiros 8 weather satellite launched aboard a Delta rocket from Cape Kennedy and reached orbit after a pre-dawn lift off. Ground tests of its automatic picture transmission system will be tried as part of a global weather forecasting network. The 265-pound satellite orbits about 820 miles across and covers 672,400 square miles per image.
