French Vote On President Stalls Again

In Versailles on December 19 the French Parliament fails to elect a president after the sixth ballot. Premier Joseph Laniel trails by 36 votes, receiving 397 to lead. Marcel-Edmond Naegelen gathers 306, while Jean Medecin declines. The seventh ballot is set for 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Black man admits fatally harming Pamplico girl and Melvey Allen

Raymond Carney, 38, arrested in Johnsonville after admitting to fatally injuring 15 year old Betty Cain and shooting 22 year old Melvey Allen near Pamplico. Cain's body found in Pee Dee riverbank and Allen's in an abandoned well. Carney, an ex convict, had escaped a Wilson County prison camp and hid in woods during pursuit. Authorities say he resisted arrest with a hidden bar and was moved to the Johnsonville jail. More details on page two-A.

Weather Halts Rebuilding For Sparks Family In High Point

Cold weather stops concrete topping on a low cost fireproof home for Benjamin Sparks and his family after a fire destroyed their previous residence. The NC SMRC campaign has raised about 1000 dollars with local contractors and neighbors volunteering. Clarence Lambeth and Alton Stanford help fundraise at 1313 Highland Ave while the family stays with an older son.

Investigator Finds Still While Shopping For Christmas Tree

Howard C. Matthews of the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board searched a Bedford County woods with his wife and two dogs to find a cedar tree. Instead he uncovered a 250 gallon copper and wood still on six barrels of liquor. He spent the afternoon detaching the contraption before returning to Lynchburg to finish holiday shopping.

Eisenhower Ends Confab With GOP Leaders On 1954 Program

President Eisenhower wrapped a three day conference with Republican congressional leaders, detailing a 1954 program aimed at protecting security welfare and economic stability. Freight Train Strikes Car In Thomasville Two Hurt

Two Lexington cousins were injured when a slow freight train struck their car at the Salem Street crossing in downtown Thomasville. Haywood Hughes, 27, suffered a fractured skull and brain lacerations in a very critical condition, while Charles Hughes sustained a brain concussion and head lacerations but was expected to recover.

Eisenhower Budget Slashes Army Manpower Further

Last minute revisions proposed to President Eisenhower cut Army strength to about 1,165,000 by July 1 1955 from a current level just over 1 1/2 million. In Staley North Carolina on December 19 a 15 year old woman Mrs Mary Mines died after officials entered her one room cabin with a court order. Her nephew George Fox died later at Randolph County Hospital from presumed exposure and starvation. Coroner said no inquest planned.

Convicts Escape From Michigan Prison In Hostage Flee

Five inmates escaped from Southern Michigan Prison using a tunnel and torch, seizing a pistol and car. They terrorized a Jackson household, taking a housewife and a nurse hostage while police pursued the stolen vehicle, with six captured and two believed hiding in Jackson.
