The 22 American war prisoners who joined communists prepare a Christmas with a truck of athletic gear and food from the Communists, delivered by Indian troops. They will share with one Briton and 327 South Koreans, plan an athletic meet after noon and a party at night, weather permitting.
In northern New Mexico mountain towns and pueblos Christmas blends Spanish and Indian traditions. The Highway Commission released detailed plans to straighten U S 301 and bypass bottlenecks from South Carolina to the Virginia line. The route would run east of several towns, rejoin the current road at Kenly, and proceed north of Fayetteville and beyond with a 260 foot right of way and cloverleaf intersections. Estimated cost starts near 23 million dollars with about six million in surplus funds available for modernization.
Elmer Dolan, a St. Louis officer involved in the Hall arrest, was indicted by a federal grand jury for perjury over the handling of the Greenlease ransom money. The indictment cites false testimony about whether ransom suitcases were brought to the police station. Dolan is jailed on $25,000 bond. fellow officer Shoulders had resigned amid dispute over the investigation.
Egypt's antiquities department announced the discovery of a 5,000 year old step pyramid in the Sakkara area south of Cairo. The structure lies about 170 yards from the great step pyramid built by Pharaoh Djoser. French archaeologist P Lauer and Mohammed Zaky Ghoneim led the find near Sakkara.
