Waterway Could Slash Freight Costs, State Says
Chicago Dec 18 The Illinois Waterway linking the Great Lakes to the Mississippi would give Illinois the second lowest built freight transportation rate in the world according to AL Warnes chief engineer. Barnes designed the Panama Canal locks and helped rebuild the New York state barge canal. He says large locks on the Lewis waterway could cut transport costs by about 50 percent below New York rates. The chart shows freight ships from 10 000 to 123 000 tons and a one ton shipment covering 2 000 miles for a dollar. The canal would rank near the top for cheap hauls with railroads averaging 100 miles per dollar and improved highways 20 miles per dollar.
