U S commerce department reports October consumer income at a record annual rate of 215.6 billion dollars, up 0.9 billion from prior records. Employment data for November show earnings remaining high, with wage earners and owners seeing gains while veterans and unemployment benefits drop.
Chicago reports pork prices rising as beef and lamb shortages push up costs. Drought in the southwest and corn price supports lift feed costs, while cattle and sheep marketed since November 1 fall sharply, reducing supply and quality. Prices trend downward despite smaller stocks.

Alfred P. Sloan chairman of General Motors received a Doctor of Science degree at Duke University during founders day ceremonies in Durham. Sloan urged industry to fund broad university research, saying pure inquiry belongs at the university level and big companies should lead in support. Governor R Gregg Cherry attended. Duke announced three new honorary council members: Alexander H Sands Jr Clyde A Dillon and Frank P Sherrill.
Otis B. Johnson will retire as secretary of the Federal Trade Commission on December 31 after a 44 year government career. D. C. Daniel of Arlington, Virginia, and formerly of Paris Tennessee, will succeed him. Daniel joined the commission after serving as secretary to Rep. Herron Pearson and served on the trial staff for ten years.
The United Nations Assembly approved a three nation Palestine conciliation commission with 385 votes to 15 and eight abstentions. The plan sponsored by the United States and Britain aims to bring permanent peace to the Holy Land and was celebrated as the crowd in Paris applauded. Israel signaled readiness for direct negotiations with Arab governments, while Lebanon Trans-Jordan and Egypt accepted armistice talks with Israel conditions.
London reports Britain's navy and air force conducted a major drill to probe if enemy fleets could approach English shores. A simulated atom bomb using bright flares was dropped near Plymouth as weather aided the operations and fighters tried to locate ships amid overcast skies.
