In New York on December 11 a federal grand jury pressed for early findings in a spy probe. William W. Pigman former Bureau of Standards official from Appleton Wisconsin agreed to cooperate. Alger Hiss Henry J Wadleigh and Donald Hiss were subpoenaed as the inquiry continued with possible indictments before next Wednesday.
Congressional investigators of the House Un American Activities Committee prepare to release a dozen secret papers linking a Red spy ring to the State Department a decade ago. Whittaker Chambers claims he obtained copies from Alger Hiss and Henry Wadleigh, with Mrs Hiss accused of copying originals. Mundt says clues about a typewriter may prove the papers’ origin while Hiss and his brother Donald are questioned after a grand jury inquiry. Chambers resigned as a Time senior editor amid a $75,000 libel suit.
Nathan T. Corn of Rock Hill resumed testimony in York County for the sixth day of a trial charging him with murdering George C. Beam Jr. Beam, head of Carolina Oil Co in Rock Hill, was found June 12 in a crate in the Catawba River. Corn testified of their close relation and revealed a 1930s Hawaii court martial and a whiskey theft conviction.

Funeral services were held in Fountain Inn South Carolina for Robert Quillen a 61 year old columnist whose work appeared in over 300 newspapers nationwide. Quillen a native of Syracuse Kansas and former tramp printer died in Hendersonville North Carolina. Three denomination ministers participated at First Baptist Church as Quillen who valued small town life was remembered for his journalistic career.
