First units of an American battle group rolled into West Berlin amid Soviet threats to use the highway lifeline from West Germany. About 200 men with 25 vehicles crossed Checkpoint Bravo, amid patrols and checks by Soviet guards, as the 1st Battle Group, 19th Infantry, began a staged move across the autobahn toward Berlin.

Unemployment Rate Drops for First Time in Year

Highway Body Chooses Western Route for I-95

The State Highway Commission approved a western alignment for Interstate 95 avoiding the Roanoke Rapids Weldon corridor and tying near Kenly. An eastern route along U S 301 would be longer by about six miles and cost travelers roughly four million dollars annually. A spur from I-95 to 301 north of Rocky Mount would remain a option. AP reports education costs are climbing for colleges and students. State schools remain cheaper for in state students while private colleges run higher tuition. Duke University plans a 200 dollar annual tuition rise for 1963 64. Two Men Die In Charlotte Car Crash

In Charlotte a car plowed into a parked garbage truck in a residential area, killing driver John Robert Bartlett 21 and Floyd Jennings Kisiah 31. Two others Edna Rushing 20 and Judith Ann Purser 16 were injured. Floyd Okie Tison 30 had minor injuries and refused treatment.
