Childs Sentenced To Death In North Carolina Case
ASHEVILLE AP Bobby Childs 34 was found guilty of rape and first degree burglary by a jury with no mercy recommendation. Superior Court Judge Harry C. Martin sentenced Childs to die in the gas chamber January 28. His lawyers said they would appeal. An anonymous bomb threat delayed Judge Martins charge as jurors awaited instruction. The rape victim was a 70 year old white widow last May 27. Police cleared the courtroom for about 15 minutes while deputies hunted for a non existent bomb. The sheriff said a caller claimed a bomb on the fifth floor then hung up. Jury included two Negroes from McDowell County where the panel was drawn after defense attempts to move the trial. The defense pleaded for mercy. See CHILDS on Page 2-A.

Bulk Of Gls Tied Up Guarding Bases
In Saigon AP dispatch, Allied forces in Viet Nam face insufficient manpower to thrust against Viet Cong. Most U S and Vietnamese troops are tied to security duties, leaving few ready for search operations. North Vietnamese influx shifts balance back, with Communists willing to lose hundreds. War likely to bring larger battles unless U S forces can destroy big Viet Cong units. Total forces exceed 685,000: 165,000 American, 500,000 Vietnamese, 18,000 other troops.
