Mountbatten India Burma lead in war plans debated
War Department sources discount Mountbatten over MacArthur claims and flag a separate British command for Burma. Churchill seeks to show resolve in Asia while a British mission in Washington studies forces, weapons, and logistics for the Orient with surveys not finishing until early 1944. Washington speculates on Hull’s successor as well as Acheson’s rise, amid a graft of New Deal figures and Deepening policy rifts in the State Department.
