Mentally Ill Treatment Centers Need North American Alliance
United States urgently needs halfway houses and outpatient clinics for former mental patients, says John H. Beard of Fountain House. He notes dwindling public hospitals and calls for community centers with federal and state aid to retrain and help discharged patients gain employment. Fountain House, started by patients in 1948 as WANA, now operates six activity units and a Transitional Employment Placement program with 40 New York firms.

Israel's silicone soil coat saves crops in drought
Scientists at Hebrew University led by Prof. Daniel Hillel developed a silicone coating for soil clods formed during plowing. The waterproof layer reduces runoff and evaporation, suppresses surface weeds, and helps retain moisture in arid regions, potentially lowering crop failure risks without irrigation.
