Redevelopment Commission Wins Partial Court Victory in High Point

Judge Allen Gwyn ruled the Supreme Court objections to the local project were met but kept the restraining order in place on a day to day basis. A next hearing to decide on dissolving the order is expected next week with a possible $250000 bond if continued. The judge also rejected a broad charge of arbitrariness while accepting amendments from the Redevelopment Commission on urban renewal terms.

Opening Day Flue-Cured Tobacco Markets Open Strong

Eastern tobacco markets report opening day sales of 10,417,902 pounds at an average of 46.26 per hundred. North Carolina sold 5,640,568 pounds and South Carolina 6,279,138 pounds with mixed gains and some price declines, while total Belt sales reached 11,919,706 pounds as volume remained heavy and quality varied.

Living Costs Rise .3% In July

Washington AP reports living costs rose three tenths of a percent in July the largest monthly rise in a year. Meat poultry and fish prices led the gain boosting the food index 0.9 percent from June to July while meat costs remained 1.4 percent below a year earlier. Transportation and medical care rose 0.2 percent each as housing held steady amid offsetting moves in furnishings and fuels.
