Democrats open their convention with a large pep rally honoring Lyndon B. Johnson and Hubert H. Humphrey. In speeches accepting nominations, the President and his running mate promise an overwhelming victory against Barry Goldwater.
Flue cured tobacco auctions opened on a disappointing note on major Eastern North Carolina belt markets due to weak competition from buyers for large domestic manufacturers. Prices generally improved over 1963 but top offers hovered around 66 dollars per hundred pounds with some baskets at 69 dollars. Growers reported sales ranging from high teens to mid sixties per hundred while some loads sold much cheaper in certain warehouses. The scene reflected a cautious start despite better quality than last year.
President Johnson joined old friends in Winchester for a final tribute to a prominent spouse of Senator Harry F. Byrd. Washington guests traveled by helicopter as mourners gathered at Christ Episcopal Church. The service followed the death of Mrs Byrd from a heart attack amid tobacco price support program concerns.

In Saigon the ruling military junta named Maj. Gen. Nguyen Khanh Maj. Gen. Duong Van Minh and Lt. Gen. Tran Thi Khiem to govern for 60 days as troops and mobs clash across the city. At least eight to ten protesters killed and many wounded as Buddhist and Catholic demonstrators battle government forces.
Senator Barry Goldwater said President Johnson’s Vietnam policy destroys the myth that South Vietnam is a major voter concern. He argued Humphrey’s liberal program points to bigger government and that Johnson’s choice signals clear party differences while avoiding immediate peace talks. Goldwater spoke from Catalina Island and urged military strength before any negotiated settlement.
Hurricane Cleo pounded Miami and the Gold Coast with 100 mile per hour winds driving through Hallandale Hollywood Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach. Fires looting and toppled towers marked the brutal battering as authorities considering disaster area status and Cape Kennedy warned of further danger.
Alfred Foushee testified at a habeas corpus hearing that Frank Joseph Rinaldi tried to hire him to kill his wife and offered money. Foushee said Rinaldi urged brutal acts, made unwanted advances, and allegedly said I did it after the Christmas Eve death of Mrs. Rinaldi. Rinaldi, 35, is jailed pending trial on a murder indictment. a lie detector test was admitted over defense objections.
Cleo's strong winds pushed a railroad freight car eight tiles from south of Hollywood to Fort Lauderdale. The run away car struck the Dania station damaging it and seriously injuring the auto driver. At Pompano Beach wind collapsed a trailer home trapping two persons who were rescued unharmed.
