Strange Restrictions In Ancient Insurance Policy
John Converse took a Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance policy in 1863. He later died in Charlotte and his claim was handled in Greensboro. The policy bore restrictive rules: travel limits, prohibitions on certain jobs, and limits linked to latitude and longitude, with voiding if violated. Ten years after issuance he was allowed to be a railway conductor and reside north of latitude 32 in the United States, moving North Carolina into compliance.
