Across North Carolina communities resistance to school desegregation disrupts preparations for opening. Lumbee Indians rally in Pembroke to keep children in Indian schools while Burlington parents oppose sending kids across town to a former white school. In Charlotte vandalism targets several schools amid delayed opening. Durham also faces first time busings for about 2700 students under the plan.
Transportation notes show that bus stops serving primary and grammar schools are published on Page 12A today in the Enterprise. A forthcoming Wednesday issue will publish the junior and senior high stops.
UN begun Arab-Israeli discussions under UN auspices with Israel Jordan and Egypt accepting a U S peace framework. Israeli delegate Yosef Te koah said progress depends on Arab will and warned about cease fire violations by Egypt. Jarring and UN Secretary General Thant stayed cautiously optimistic about reaching a lasting peace.
