Groundbreaking, Homecoming Day at Mitchell Grove Methodist

Mitchell Grove Methodist holds Homecoming Day with a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow led by Miss Martha Parsons turning the first shovel for the new sanctuary. Dr J Clay Madison will deliver the message at the 11 a.m. worship, followed by a picnic lunch and a Sing spiration service with visiting groups. The church on Rivett Drive is led by Pastor Rev Roy Grant. Congregational singing is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Church of Christ on 907 E Lexington Ave.

Quiet Acceptance As Negro Family Resettles In Southern Pines

Two years after an elderly Negro couple moved into a white neighborhood on the outskirts of Southern Pines their life remains peaceful. City officials note no trouble since the move as neighbors, including Mrs. Martin L. White and Mayor W. E. Blue, describe a calm, dignified integration. The Whites, retirees from New York, are active in the local Negro community and civic life, and their arrival earlier sparked tense conflicts over housing.

Bodies Of Three Girls Found In Old Quarry

Rescue workers recovered the bodies of Nancy Gurnsey 10 Ruthie 9 and Teresa 8 from a Dixon Illinois quarry after a 24 day search. Parents were absent during the discovery as teams uncovered the lifeless remains beneath collapsed earth.

Plane Drops 14 Cases Of Explosives Near Meridian

An Air Force transport plane diverted to Meridian Mississippi dropped 17 cases of explosives including rockets and two 1 000 pound bombs to lighten the load for a forced landing. Pilot Maj Earl Helms said the two engine V119 was overloaded and the bombs had no warheads though caution was urged for handling. The craft landed north and west of Meridian with 8 000 pounds of cargo aboard a 10 person crew including four military passengers.

Wilkes County Teen Killed in Highway 268 Crash

A 15 year old Wilkes County boy Jay Elwool Boyd was killed when a car left a curve on Highway 268 two miles east of North Wilkesboro at 12 05 a m Early Winebarger 31 and Arthur Roberts 18 were seriously injured and admitted to Wilkes General Hospital where officials listed their condition as satisfactory

Woman Dies After Warned By Patrolman

In Fayetteville North Carolina a Jacksonville minister's wife, Mrs Daisy McKinnie Williams 50, died in a single vehicle crash on North Carolina 24 eight miles east of town at 3 am after police warned her to be careful for drowsiness. Her husband the Rev Alexander Williams was injured and taken to Highsmith Hospital.

Army trims divisions and civilian payroll to meet budget

The Army announced further cost cuts including the deactivation of an additional division, the abolition of 18 anti aircraft battalions, a 15 000 man civilian payroll reduction, and 14 depots or facilities closed. Together with other services these moves aim to fit under a 39 billion dollar ceiling for the current fiscal year begun July 1. The force plans reductions to about 2.5 million troops and 53 000 civilian jobs may follow.

Young mother braves four miles of ocean to seek help

Martha Cole, 24, waded from Stratton Island after a four hour battle with tides and waves to reach the mainland and aid her boat wrecked family. Her 22 month old son Jeffery died hours later, while her husband Thomas C. fought to keep the baby’s head above water. The family, all wearing life vests, were from Jenkin ton Pennsylvania. Coast Guard airmen spotted Mrs. Cole as she was still trying to revive the child by artificial respiration aboard a helicopter. Dr. Walter D. Mazzacane treated her for shock after the ordeal.
