Rescuers in Timmins Ontario found 15 year old Ronnie Blakemore dead in a 1400 foot mine shaft debris. Bonar Scholes 16 was rescued and hospitalized after being pulled from waist deep muck.

Hoffa acknowledged past dealings with Dio in 1953 over organizing New York taxi drivers but said he did not know Dio’s antiunion activities. He portrayed a friendly relationship and described two to three years ago helping Dio demonstrate a two way radio device to the Teamsters and truck line operators in Chicago. He also mentioned an option on Florida land at Sun Valley, noting Dio bought lots there, but denied these were business transactions.
Fifteen workers were trapped in a downtown Pittsburgh sewage tunnel for nearly three hours after a fire from an electric locomotive motor blocked the tunnel entrance. All survived without injury. The locomotive carrying dirt sparked the blaze about 1,800 feet from the entry.
William P. Saunders proposed a seven point program for eastern North Carolina to attract and expand industry. The plan calls for site studies and data gathering, coordinated with C and D railroads and power companies, to promote orderly growth and encourage new and expanded local industries. A 50 year old Huggins Curtis dormitory at Gardner-Webb Junior College was destroyed by an undetermined origin fire. No injuries were reported and damage is estimated near 400000 with insurance possibly covering up to 90000. The fire began around 1 a.m. and spread rapidly, threatening Decker Hall before collapsing walls.
The AEC reports a Soviet test at Siberian proving grounds on Aug 22 described as substantial power. Strauss notes this fifth blast in a series begun April 13, part of ongoing disarmament talks as the United States probes safeguards while offering a two year test pause. United States teams continue a Nevada test series, the 13th in the ongoing program.
President Harlow Curtice of General Motors and UAW leader Walter Reuther traded sharp remarks over inflation remedies. GM proposed a two year contract extension while Reuther accused GM of short changing consumers and rejected the price cut plan as arbitrary. The dispute followed Reuther's call for a three way price reduction by GM Chrysler and Ford.
Navy units including Carrier Saratoga Forrestal and Essex joined six ships and several planes in a search about 100 miles off the North Carolina coast for a three crewed plane missing since Wednesday. One search plane ditched after running out of fuel. the crew were rescued. Pilots named are Lt. (j.g.) Asher E. Stutman Lt. (jg.) Roger G. Smith and Robert P. Dube.
A blood red fireball rose over the Nevada desert at 5 30 a m as the United States detonated the 13th device of the 1957 test series. The test at Yucca Flat used a captive balloon 1500 feet above Ground Zero with a mushroom cloud reaching 36000 feet. Newsmen observed from Angel's Peak as the cloud drifted north with the blast rated about half of nominal power.
Secretary of State Dulles won congressional commendation for allowing 24 American newsmen to report from Red China on a six month trial ending an eight year blackout. Sen. Humphrey called it long overdue and noted limits on reporters. AP assigns John Roderick from Hong Kong to cover Communist China.
Speaker Rayburn said Democrats may have a compromise proposal ready tomorrow to break the civil rights legislation impasse. He noted Lyndon B. Johnson and others participated and criticized Rep Martin plan to put judges in contempt cases without jury.
