The Board of Governors of the Bright Belt Ware House Assn meets to decide if opening dates for Middle and Old Belt flue cured markets should change. The Middle Belt would separate from the Old Belt on September 14, as sales progress across belts are reviewed for buyer availability.
Lt Gov Luther Hodges spoke at East Carolina College commencement urging support for the $72,000,000 state bond issues for school construction and mental hospitals. He told 174 graduates the college will focus on supplying better teachers for North Carolina's 1,000,000 school children. Hodges predicted Eastern North Carolina would become a Garden of Eden within 50 years as industries consider new plant locations in the area.
Prison gates opened for Norman Sasser 26 of Hallsboro John Russ 35 of Whiteville Rt 1 and Lawrence Nivins 30 of Halisboro after parole by the State Paroles Board. They were sentenced in Columbus Superior Court last September to 30 years each for conspiracy to commit assault and assault tied to Klan floggings.
