French forces under General Humbert push toward Noyon with a wide front advance between the Matz and Oise rivers reaching the Ailette river. German troops are said to have been forced back 20 miles from Lassigny to the Ailette under an official war office statement.
French general Mangin holds the south bank of the Oise from Sempyigny to Bretigny with advances beyond the river. Humbert’s troops reach the Seine left bank west of Noyon as British forces attack Germans between Soissons and the Ancre, crossing the Arras Bapaume line. In Flanders the British push toward Neuf Berquin as German retreat continues.
London reports heavy fighting advancing French under General Mangin along the Oise with favorable signs. Prisoners are taken and railway lines north of Ancre are crossed as Arras LaPalue rail line falls to French forces amid persistent German resistance. A tornado struck Tyler Minnesota last night around 4 PM killing between 30 and 35 people and injuring many more. Twenty seven bodies have been identified and the town’s restaurant area suffered the greatest loss with 16 killed when walls collapsed. only one building, a theater, survived with about 200 sheltered inside.
The casualty list from the American Expeditionary Forces reports one North Carolinian, Sergeant George W. Goodman of Salisbury, severely wounded. It totals 32 killed in action, 186 missing, 162 severely wounded, 6 died of wounds, 48 wounded, 2 died from accident and other causes, 4 died of disease, 1 prisoner. Marine corps casualties are listed separately: 5 killed in action, 1 died of wounds, total six.
