Spencer and Salisbury show calm after 1700 workers strike with no violence. Troops sent by Governor Morrison remain at county fair grounds, not deployed to shops, while organizers expect settlement within days and possible sympathy walkouts if unresolved.
Spencer August 21 The first incident of the day saw John Sloop a Salisbury post office employee strike Tom Jimison ex chaplain of the state federation of labor and pastor in Spencer He was knocked out carried to a drug store for attention and later released Jimison urged the crowd to return home and avoid further trouble amid a brief second scuffle and limited comment from Sloop
About 15 national guardsmen rode southbound train No. 45 through High Point in the early afternoon. Officials could not confirm their origin or destination. No reports of other units leaving Salisbury. it is believed they were headed to Spencer where nine guards groups were ordered by Governor Morris.
J. W. Clinard was named president at a Green Street Baptist church meeting. New officers and an executive committee were elected amid reports from city Sunday schools and talks by Dr. E. L. Middleton and Rev. Milton Whitener.
Sheriff Krider announced no news of a newsworthy event as of noon. He described rumors as unsubstantiated and clarified a water main on Southern ground was damaged not from outside. No arrests yet and debate over causes centers on inside job, accident, or air pocket during an electrical storm.

Pittsburgh August 21. Judge Cohen orders Benjamin Page president of the South Side Trust Company to re sign papers after court clerk cannot read his signature. The judge insists on a clear legible signature before accepting the documents.
Lieutenant Walter Hinton departed West Palm Beach at 10:15 AM in the seaplane Sampaio Correia hoping to reach Nassau in a few hours. Weather was favorable and the craft’s machinery was reported in good condition after a restful night for the pilot.
Johnstown Pa August 21 Mayor Cayfield ordered brewers and saloon keepers to manufacture and sell good beer with arrest for selling poor beer as a measure to curb bootleggers selling poisonous brews.
Mrs Panthea H Hilton 69 of Media Pennsyl joined Rev James W Walling 70 of Columbia South Carolina in marriage after a long romance from school days in Columbia. The couple plan to reside in Columbia after a Niagara Falls honeymoon.
Former Missouri governor Joseph W. Folk, once a Democratic presidential hopeful, is reported by physicians to be rapidly recovering from a nervous breakdown caused by overwork after a serious collapse.
The Sunday school of the First Baptist Church will hold its annual picnic at Thomasville tomorrow. Members will leave here tomorrow morning and take their dinner with them.
Disorders continued in the eight week rail shop workers strike despite peace talks in New York and assurances from big four brotherhood chiefs. Michigan Central detectives investigated an Indiana wreck killing two crewmen as violence flared at shops in Columbia and San Bernardino. Governor Allen gave Kansas City authorities 24 hours to restore order amid near riots.
Trials in municipal court yielded minor cases. Frank Rooks convicted for operating an immoral house and fined 25 dollars plus costs. M R Callaham paid costs after worthless checks. H L Frazier failed to appear and a capias issued. George Bridges paid half costs for car with cut-out. Onnie Lewellyn fined 10 dollars and costs for license violation. George Cane and Lonnie Burke fined costs for same offense. J R Odum fined costs for assault.
Carl Hedgecock faced liquor charges after a Saturday hearing before United States Commissioner W. G. Brown and was bound over to the federal court in Greensboro with a $500 bond. Deputies Gray and Prohibition Officer Reddick seized whiskey on Hedgecock’s farm north of the city on the Winston-Salem road prior to his arrest. He posted bond to appear for a preliminary hearing.
Sanford McNider, national commander of the American Legion, states a personal canvass shows a Senate majority from both parties favoring the bonus bill and pledging passage. He predicts Senate action will begin Wednesday and the measure will be approved within the week.
An accident Saturday night at the North Main and Washington intersection involved a car driven by T. B. Bowman colliding with two cars and striking several pedestrians. No serious injuries occurred to any party, and the vehicles sustained only minor damage.
Dr C C P Norris president of the Durham Rotary club received word from Roger Moore district Rotary governor that the 47th district executive officers conference will be held in Durham on November 14.
Chicago August 21. Early morning papers and correspondence seized in the raid last night on the Trade Union Educational League offices led by William Z. Foster. State's attorney Crowe says the seizure reveals a series of radical meetings in railway centers and lists of radical leaders. No arrests. investigation follows a Michigan Central wreck in Indiana with two dead and two injured and dynamite found on tracks.
Chairman Winslow of the House Commerce Committee announced after a White House conference with President Harding that a bill to create a fact finding coal commission would be introduced. The nine member panel would report to the president and to Congress by July 1, 1923, with broad investigative powers including access to coal company books. The committee planned to meet later to push for an immediate favorable report.
Washington, Aug 21. Changes in the administration tariff bill kept government printers busy over the weekend and the reprint was delayed. Fordney expected the reprint ready tomorrow for House action before a conference set to begin late tomorrow or Wednesday.
Guilford county reported 27,973.50 dollars raised for Near East Relief this year, 20 percent over quota, led by Chas. H. Hines of Greensboro. The county topped state totals, with Gaston and Mecklenburg next, and pledged cash plus clothing valued at 1,191 dollars. A new campaign may be needed as world events threaten Armenian relief and Turkey’s turmoil continues.
San Franciscans wore overcoats and furs to work as a Pacific trade wind kept temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Los Angeles logged 76, Seattle 80, and San Diego 72, with heavy garments prevailing despite the season.
John J. Blair was elected president as the Springfield Memorial Association held its 15th annual meeting at the historic Springfield church. Dr. Elwood C. Perisho spoke on commemorating local leaders, papers on William and Amanda Richardson and Jeremiah Pickett were read, and a fundraiser added another thousand dollars to the endowment. Additional officers elected included O. E. Wilson as vice president and Emma Blair as secretary.
Greensboro college for young women, supported by the North Carolina Methodists, will open September 6 for the first semester of its seventy fifth annual session. Rev. S B Turrentine, president, expects enrollment over 400 and notes the Odell Memorial building expansion enhances facilities for the college of music. The president anticipates the coming session to be the most successful in the college’s history.
GOLDSBORO August 21 Satur day sale of 32614 pounds of tobacco on local auction warehouse floors at 18 cents pushed the week total above 100000 pounds. Prices ranged 16 to 35 cents with more than 46 cents per pound seen on the local floor than at any time since opening. Warehousemen and buyers report no complaints among the 100 farmers selling.
In Greensboro Ange 2nd Pa ham Nance a young white man was badly hurt Saturday afternoon when the motorcycle he rode collided with an automobile driven by J B Ingram. He was taken to a hospital where doctors think he will recover. The bike was wrecked and the car damaged. Ingram also hurt.
