Umpire Submarine Gheen and Elliott Stand In At Welchfield
Fans witnessed two new umpires, Submarine Gheen and Elliott, selected by managers to cover for absent regulars during a double header. Morgan and Clark were late or missing, but the pair provided solid officiating with no formal objections. Cy Morgan wore the mask and breastplate early, then worked with Steve Finer, while the Raleigh catcher persisted in back talk.

Doubleheader drift in local standings after spills
Our boys could not sweep yesterday as Durham fell to Greensboro and a two win day would have helped the Pointers close on the Bulls. Herndonites trail by three games with nineteen remaining. Critics doubt the Bulls streak will last, noting even giants can slump as Peele Johnson starred for New York with a running catch and a fine fielding play. In Vienna, a dentist’s dangerous prank ended with arrest for endangering street safety.

Billy Evans argues the take-your-time pitching theory harms the game. He cites slow signals and rubber pacing as delaying tactics, notes fans dislike delays, and points to Johnson's rule speeding AL games by 15 to 20 minutes. Fast workers like Johnson and Alexander are praised as superior.
