Gasoline Taxes of Carolina Reach Big North State Amounts
Raleigh Aug 20 Approximately $3,000,000 in automobile and gasoline taxes was collected in North Carolina during 1923 24 by the automobile department under Joe B Sawyer with total 7 954 000 collected of which 3 975 000 were motor vehicle licenses and 3 979 000 gasoline taxes. The department expanded to 38 offices, issued 162 000 plates and 86 000 titles, with total branch office costs about one third of one percent of revenue. Everett praised Sawyer as a top executive and noted theft bureau gains of about $300,000 in recovered autos and a big organized thieves ring busted with a trip to Atlanta to locate the other end of the outfit. The title department under Capt Spargue Silver has grown into a valuable service. Everett calls the department the state’s biggest merchandising proposition with gross revenue about $8,000,000 and sub-3 percent overhead.
