Railroad Presidents Pause on Wilson Plan In Crisis

Washington August 19 After an hour at the White House with President Wilson the 33 railroad presidents left without indicating acceptance of arbitration but pledged to continue talks. Wilson urged an eight hour day and arbitration on other issues, saying the plan is fair and public interest demands its acceptance. The crisis looms as negotiations continue and the employes committee of 640 voted to back the president's outline.

William J. Allen Dies After Illness at Trinity

William J. Allen died this morning at his Trinity home after nearly two years of illness. He leaves a widow and siblings, was a High Point merchant with Allen Brothers, and his funeral will be held Sunday at Long Chapel with interment in Alamance County.

Season's first bale sold at Morven

Morven August 19 The first bale of North Carolina raised new crop cotton was sold at Morven by T. K. Ratliff and bought by G. A. Martin for a Monroe firm. It graded street mid dling and brought 14 cents per pound, weight 436 pounds.
