South Seen In Best Position To Erase Racial Difficulties

Evangelist Billy Graham, launching a Los Angeles crusade, argues the South offers the best chance for racial harmony. He notes nonsegregated church work, personal interrace bonds, and urges all-night prayer meetings to foster Christian love across races. He stresses integration in churches and public facilities while acknowledging private property rights and the long moral struggle ahead.

Would It Tear Up a Church Over Race Relations?

The story reports on ministerial departures in Baptist and Methodist churches over racial issues. It notes resignations and pressures faced by pastors, with some leaving for other posts or remaining silent. It cites Rev. Joe Patterson and Rev. Albert McClellan as key figures and mentions Bishop Marvin Franklin and Mississippi cases involving Negro admission denials. The piece frames tensions around integration, church unity, and leadership response in the South.
