A hit-and-run driver killed two pedestrians and injured five when his blue Ford sedan with a broken windshield struck a group of walkers four miles east of Durham. Raleigh and Wake County police issued broadcasts and searched for the car, reports said.
In New York on August 17, Lou Ambers weighed 1344 pounds, defending his lightweight crown with a slim quarter pound lead over challenger Henry Armstrong. Armstrong tipped scales at 154 pounds after gaining four pounds since the postponement.
In Mexico City a fight between University of Mexico extension students and rival vocational school students left one youth shot in the head and three others injured. Police and firemen restored order as the clash ended.
Governor Hoey telegraphed Douglas Corigan inviting the famous flyer to Kill Devil Hill birthplace of aviation and site of the first English settlement in America where leaders perhaps had compass trouble leading to the lost colony disappearance.

In New York Aug 17 AP Dewey told a blue ribbon jury that James J Hines Tammany district leader acted as political protector for the Schultz policy racket He described a March 1932 meeting with Abraham Weinberg and Dixie Davis and cited Harlem as its center with 600 storekeepers acting as collectors He asserted the racket yielded 45000 daily in 1933 totaling about 20000000 yearly and that Hines influenced police and court outcomes while funding campaigns including former DA William Copeland Lodge with gangland votes
In Budapest on August 17, sixteen green shirted Hungarian Nazi protesters were arrested outside the Supreme Court during Ferenc Szalasi’s appeal of a three year prison term for incitement. The court will rule on August 24. Police also blocked a church rally by Szalasi followers. Szalasi led Hungary’s largest Nazi group and claimed legal means only.
Weather across the eastern Seaboard shows scattered showers moderation after days of deadly heat. Nine deaths in Pennsylvania, 18 hospitalizations in Washington, D C, and widespread prostrations stress the strain on residents and services.
Aug 17 dispatch from Hendaye reports General Gonzalo Queipo de Llano’s insurgents attacking Government defenses along the Zujar river north of the main railway. Government commander General Jose Asencio reinforced Cabeza Del Buey mountain and a railway tunnel captured yesterday. Cabeza Del Buey lies about 20 miles west of Almaden as fighting shifts toward Hermitage Santa Maria and the Almaden road via Penalsorao and Capilla. Deadlocks linger on the Ebro and Segre fronts.
Paris reports Spanish insurgents have aligned with Italy and Germany, threatening Western powers’ hopes to withdraw foreign volunteers from Spain. Franco’s response to Britain’s plan remains secret as Paris predicts the London plan may fail. Negrin’s government strengthens its grip while ministers from Basque and Catalan factions exit, replaced by new appointees. Observers in Paris say Franco’s war effort likely needs Mussolini's Blackshirts to prevail.

Edward A. O Neal president of the American Farm Bureau Federation told North Carolina farmers that the federal government should spend 1.5 billion dollars annually to raise farm income. He argued the protective system costs farmers and backed government action to raise farm income by about 2 billion dollars above 1937 levels, noting AAA spending under 1933 to 1937 boosted farm income by 13.5 billion.
The Association of American Railroads reported 91 Class One railroads with July operating revenues of 240.9 million dollars, below 1937 by 17.8 percent and 34.7 percent below 1930. Freight revenues were 189.8 million, passenger 31.2 million, reflecting declines from 1937 and 1930 levels.
The Interstate Commerce Commission orders a hearing to probe the reasonableness and lawfulness of truck rates for canned goods dried beans and peas dried fruits rice and salt moving from Wilmington North Carolina Norfolk Portsmouth and Richmond Virginia. The hearing will be held in Norfolk on September 20.
Representative Mason named eight government officials as alleged members of the American League for Peace and Democracy with ties to the Communist party. Officials cited include Lambertson Smythe Silcox Marshall Chapman Carmody Anderson Barrows. Chaillaux testified public funds aid communism. Lambertson called charges ridiculous but acknowledged league membership exists. Little Current Ont Aug 17 Canadian Press planes and fishing vessels join a search for Daniel Dodge 21 heir to a Michigan auto fortune presumed drowned after a dynamite explosion. Six boats with 25 to 30 men pull the inside channel depths while planes scour the area a reward offered by Alfred G Wilson of Detroit for recovery. Mrs Dodge remains listed as improving and Lloyd Bryant Frank Valiquette likewise expected to recover from injuries.

A Rockingham Superior Court jury found J. D. Davis and John W. Wilson both police officers from Danville Virginia guilty of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the deaths of four people in an automobile crash. Judge J. H. Clement deferred sentencing and offered no comment on the verdict.
The High Point council plans a rapid move to apply to the Public Works Administration for a loan and grant to add four overhead bridges as part of the grade crossing project. The decision follows a Merchants Association delegation led by George E. Hutchens. A second vote will decide whether to seek authorit y to issue bonds for a municipal hospital.
Knoxville engineer Fred Manley testified before a congressional investigative committee denying he wrote unsigned letters to W H Ford in 1933 about Senator George L Berry's expected settlement with the TVA over damages to marble and mineral holdings near Norris Dam. He said references to a settlement concerned his own employment, not Berry’s claims, while Berry denied attempting to defraud the government and blamed TVA board bitter feuds for the controversy. Leading Berry associates C A Harris and George Collins were called to testify, with TVA directors Lilienthal and Morgan expected to follow.
