A 16 city Associated Press survey shows overall price increases from last August with bread up 17 percent, eggs 72 cents a dozen, and butter up 62 percent from 1939. Housing costs rise, textiles vary, and meat prices like ground round and bacon reveal substantial gains. New York and Baltimore top beef costs at $1.10 a pound. national average now 86 cents per pound.
At the Illinois State Fair Senator Glen Taylor of Idaho campaigned for GOP votes in downstate Illinois. He sang It's a Long Way to Tipperary as his wife Dora sang What You Gonna Do When the War Comes Round while asserting Soviet Russia cannot fight or threaten.
Statesville voters in a special election approved the city manager form of government. A motion to reduce the eight member board of aldermen to a four member council was carried, with the new council to be chosen in 1949 and to select the city manager.
Washington August 14 investigators in the congressional spy hunt consider lie detectors and missing servants as they seek backing for key testimony. Whittaker Chambers testified of a wartime Communist underground, naming Donald Hiss and Alger Hiss who denied the charges and waived rights. The committee studies transcripts as perjury actions are pressed against possible liars.
Victor S. Bryant of Durham, a supporter of Charles Johnson and William Umstead in the recent primaries, was named secretary of the North Carolina Democratic Party. Capus Waynick was elected chairman in a harmony session, and Bryant takes office after meeting with Waynick, Vice Chairman Mrs. D. A. McCormick, Governor-nominee Kerr Scott, and Senator-Nominee J. M. Broughton.
Washington reports a next year need for about one million new soldiers and military supply workers by June 1949. Robert C. Goodwin, head of the US Employment Service, says labor shortages exist but civilian industry can be preserved while meeting defense demands. He cites population growth, outside recruitment, and relocation as key factors.

Secretary Royall told the Virginia Bar Association in White Sulphur Springs that the United States will not be coerced in Moscow talks and will stay in Berlin with supplies and personnel. He praised Generals Clay and MacArthur but said they do not make policy and called for continued review of reparations under the European recovery program.
A Raleigh brief lists updated ferry schedules for eastern North Carolina. Private Atlantic Ocracoke runs one round trip daily. Aligator River and Croatan Sound ferries operate from morning to evening with night sailings during certain days. Oregon Inlet and Engelhard Hatteras links show varied times, with crossing times of about 20 to 30 minutes and seasonal adjustments through Labor Day and October.
Senator Vandenberg of Michigan may broadcast his views on foreign policy to outline Republican positions ahead of Governor Dewey’s campaign discussions. North Carolina banks increased resources by 42.69 million in the year ended June 30, totaling 1.827 billion. State commercial banks rose to 1.288 billion, industrial banks reached 54.11 million, with 152 banks and 158 branches overall. Gurney P. Hood announced the new highs and structure gains.
Washington reports the illicit drug trade expanded in the year ending June 30. Opium cocaine and heroin seizures totaled 6 755 ounces up from 6 091. Marihuana seized about 40 000 ounces with 17 015 marijuana cigarettes seized, up 8 000 from 1947. A total of 3 180 arrests were made by the Bureau of Narcotics and the Customs Bureau.
Ernest Johnson claims a uranium find near Gunn Lake in Bridge River district about 120 miles north of Vancouver. Dr. J. F. Walker confirms the radioactive ore as uranium and notes tests are incomplete. Johnson and Egil Lorntzen form the Pacific Uranium syndicate to develop the property under 1948 Dominion guarantees to buy ore for five years.
In a 100 minute State Department meeting Under-Secretary Lovett refused Russia’s bid to force Mrs Oksana Kosenkina under 24 hour Soviet guard and remove her from a New York hospital. Russia sought four steps to regain control while American authorities protected her.
Auctions in the eastern North Carolina belt will begin on Thursday for the 1948 flue-cured tobacco crop. Overall crop projections show a smaller harvest than 1947 due to reduced acreage, with production set around 1.005 billion pounds across all flue-cured types. Loan rates have risen in most cases from 1 to 8 dollars per hundred for grade loans, with tied offerings ranging from 9 to 70 dollars.
