Stock market edges toward 1000 as Dow gains

New York stocks rose again but momentum slowed near the 1000 level. The Dow inched up to 995.68 at noon, a 2.25 point gain, after a sharp one day rise, while the NYSE composite and American Exchange indexes edged higher. Transamerica led activity, trading a 217,600 share block at 12 percent.
