One Time Mental Patients Form Their Own Club
A Manhattan clubhouse hosts 100 former mental patients who socialize while agreeing on no romance among members. Fountain House Fellowship, supported by psychiatrists and the American Psychiatric Association, offers evenings of glee, lectures, art classes, and craft activities, with successful job placements and welfare services backing their reintegration. The group began at Rockland State Hospital and evolved into a foundation backed by Mrs. Howard Schermerhorn and others, opening in July 1948.
