Greek forces stepped up operations against Communist led guerrillas by storming the Vitsi Triangle near the Albanian and Yugoslav borders. Informed sources said troops seized four strategic heights in a fortified area believed to house about 7,000 guerrillas. The Vitsi Triangle lies about 60 miles north of Grammos where a prior offensive was begun.
The 1949 general assembly gave the state department of agriculture authority to regulate fairs across North Carolina. Commissioner L Y Ballentine asks all district county and community fairs to register with the department before opening, designating official names and officers. The move delays strict enforcement this year but aims to curb cheap carnival shows. The North Carolina State Fair will feature a premium list over 35000 dollars and run October 18 to 22, with minimal improvements planned for the fair grounds beforehand.
Strong earth shocks hit Ambato in the quake zone as aftershocks pushed more houses down and panic spread among remaining residents.
