AP reports signs point to a Korean scale commitment in Vietnam around Christmas with as many as 470 000 U S troops in Southeast Asia including 290 000 in Vietnam 60 000 offshore and 25 000 at bases abroad. Officials note possible 400 000 to 450 000 year end ranges but no firm decision exists yet.
Fresh attention centers on two studies suggesting current American forces in Viet Nam may be insufficient for the long run. A Marine Corps report says 750000 troops could sustain Hanoi’s pace, while an Army study warns of an eight year Communist holdout. The Pentagon and Joint Chiefs deny such studies exist.
Maj James H Kasler a famed Viet Nam War pilot was shot down 70 miles northwest of Hanoi after his F105 Thunderchief was hit while he and wingmen carried out a raid on oil storage tanks Kasler parachuted to safety but was not recovered by rescue helicopters and was presumed captured His career spanned 22 years with combat missions in Vietnam Korea and World War II where he served as a tailgunner He was nicknamed The Destroyer by fellow pilots and his loss weighed on Air Force leadership and aircrews alike He previously led a Hanoi raid hailed as precise and effective by officials and reporters
Washington reports negotiators for grounded airlines and striking machinists agreed to try to establish an arbitration plan to settle unresolved issues while workers vote on submission. Union president P. L. Siemiller warned members likely will reject arbitration.
Vice President Humphrey denies Kennedy replacing him as Johnsons 1968 running mate. He calls the vice presidency a hazard course, notes unchanged core philosophy but new responsibilities, and welcomes liberal recruits amid aging campaign talk.
U S Marines engaged the Viet Cong in a heavy clash five miles west of Tam Ky, reporting 140 enemy killed as Colorado operation enters its fifth day. Marine casualties were light with air support aiding villagers in the Mekong Delta strike that killed 15 Vietnamese and wounded 182 after rebels held villagers at gun point.
A Cleveland grand jury report alleges black nationalists and Communist youth leaders collaborated to incite last month’s riot in the Hough area. The 17 page report says the outbreak was organized precipitated and exploited by a small group of trained professionals and notes they were aided by misguided people.
The grand jury cited Lewis G. Robinson founder of the JFK Jomo Freedom Kenyatta House as a key figure in the events before the Hough outbursts. It said his group and others advocated violence and that he pledged support to the Communist party of Ohio. Robinson denied the affiliations.
Scientists warn evolution may be ending as humans gain ability to cause mutations. Advances let lab grown organs replace worn hearts and mutations be predicted and controlled. Genes, carried on 46 chromosomes in body cells, guide growth from fertilization onward.
The House approved the 1966 civil rights bill 259 to 157, keeping the open housing provision. Republican leaders failed 22 to 190 in a bid to kill the housing ban. Senate fate hinging on Dirksen opposition, with Mansfield stating possible calendar or Judiciary Committee action.
